"...if we are to preserve culture we must continue to create it."
Okapu finds pride in embracing traditional weaving techniques into its handbag designs. Back in the day, grandmothers in the Akamba tribe would come together with their daughters and granddaughters, in song and dance, weaving beautiful goods for their homes. They would use fibres from the sisal plant that grew wild and free all around the community. From bags for the hunters to simple kitchen essentials; it was a time to bond, to create and solve problems as a collective. Each of our bags is a testament of such a time.

The Creative Director - Sheila Atieno
Before I claimed the title of a designer in its fullness, I worked as an engineer who suppressed her creativity. I always say I did not start Okapu, Okapu found me - leading me on a journey of not only discovering my true self but also the power that lays within an empowered woman.
