WEAVE with OKAPU : traditional basket weaving in kenya
Basket weaving wonderfully highlights Kenya’s heritage, creativity, and communal spirit. Every weave is a story of patience and artistry, remembering the traditions passed down through generations of women. Many times while selling our Okapu bags at flea markets and pop ups, we came across many Kenyans looking to relive the experience of watching their grandmothers weaving kiondo baskets. That was our inspiration to start teaching.
Here at Okapu, we honor that legacy, by not only creating beautiful pieces but by making the skill of basket weaving as accessible as possible through our monthly classes, DIY Kits and weaving experiences.
Our passion for the craft takes us across the country to explore the diverse basket weaving techniques of Kenya. From the coastal palm-weaving traditions of Diani to the intricate papyrus and sisal work in Kisumu, we immerse ourselves in regional artistry and curate weaving experiences to share what we have learnt.
Our basket-weaving classes are designed for all levels, from travelers seeking authentic Kenyan culture, expats looking to try something mindful, or Kenyans looking to reconnect with their heritage. We invite you to slow down, bond, and create through our basket-weaving experiences. Learn one-on-one from local skilled artisans for a real homegrown experience.
We offer flexible private classes perfect for couples, families, schools, corporate events, or small groups wanting a more personal experience. You can also join our group class every 3rd Sunday of the month in Nairobi for a relaxed afternoon of creativity and rich conversations.
